It was over 2 years ago that the PUP concert I had tickets for was cancelled in the pandemic. I finally caught them while on their new tour, in San Francisco at The Warfield on 4/20.
I took a midweek vacation so I wouldn’t have to battle Bay Area traffic. After enjoying a sunny day of disc golf and recreation with an old pal who lives in the city, we arrived at The Warfield mid way through the opening act.
The venue has a classic theater vibe. The molding, chandeliers, grand staircase, and blue walls really add up. The theater has a large capacity but seating was tight, and the floor was small. Not a typical venue to host punk music.
PUP had come to SF after playing Coachella. I am happy to see they managed to thrive despite having 2 years of touring cancelled. They said that this was the most people they’ve played to in SF. Last I saw them was in SF at the Fillmore and that didn’t feel as crowded but that venue is all floor space.

The relatively small floor at the Warfield made for an intense mosh pit. All but the very edges seemed to ebb and flow with the mass of people. As hectic as it was, the community ethic remained to mind for each others safety. However, the show did pause as one person was escorted out for medical attention. It’s unclear what the situation was. PUP took the moment to raise the house lights, get water out to the crowd, and calm the vibe down before playing their last few songs.
PUP is a great live act. I honestly don’t know their music too well, but the energy of what they are playing is perfect for dancing in a dense mass of strangers. When I first saw them live not knowing what to expect, I really did not expect dancing so much! It’s moshing, so it’s not for everyone, but if you can take a few bruises don’t sleep on a PUP show.
