Ace of Spades concert

Ace of Spades survived the pandemic and I got to attend a concert headlined by Pine Grove. Masks were “requested by the band”, and hand sanitizer was readily avaiable.

In March 2020 I had tickets for an Ace of Spades concert to see PUP. After canceling three times, they eventually just issued refunds. PUP will return this month, but I’m going to their SF show. When I got invited to see Pine Grove I looked forward to finally returning to Ace of Spades.

We showed up to the R St block early to get tacos across the street at Mas Tacos. Street parking is free on Sundays and we lucked into a nearby space. The weather was great for patio dining, and the drinks and tacos arrived quickly. We could also watch the doors to Ace of Spades, trying to spy band members. By the time we were done and the doors were opening, a long line had formed so we opted to wait in the Shady Lady Saloon at the end of the block.

Absinthe made to order at Shady Lady

The Shady Lady has a stage too, but their shows do not start until 9pm. They typically host jazz and soul styles from what I’m told. They do sometimes have afternoon shows to host student bands and the like. I’m not too keen on late shows but I’ll come out for the experience.

We made it to the Ace of Spades doors with only a small line for security. After a body check, an ID check, and a ticket check, we were free to roam the place. This show had standing general admission with optional upgrade for limited seating. Three bars were open for service, helping to spread out the crowd. We ended up near the north bar, behind the sound board.

The view

The sound was pretty good where we were. Plenty loud, but you could still talk closely and I didn’t bring out my ear plugs until the headlining act came on with their high energy music. I’ll admit it, I am picky about sound, so rather than saying what I didn’t like I’ll just say that I’m curious about what challenges this room faces.

The acts were young idie style bands. The opening acts were solid but have room to grow. I had no knowledge of Pine Grove and I was pleased by their show. The lead musician is affable and the variety of the band instrumentation kept my interest.

The audience was also young in general. Maybe that’s why our space near the bar wasn’t crowded. The staff were all friendly and the bathroom was clean enough given the crowd. I felt comfortable, and didn’t mind standing.

I don’t regularly go to Ace of Spades so I imagine it’ll be a while before I return. If you know of a good show coming up, let me know!

Don’t know this act, but its soon
